Team Power Smart

Posted by Jennifer on Feb 06 2009 | Environment , Life in Vancouver

My mother grew up in the 1930s, so she was always turning off lights and saving things like aluminum foil.  Fast forward to the future, and my husband is the one turning off the lights.  Since Daniel has started working at Power Smart, I have him following me around turning off lights, monitors, printers, etc.

Since we joined Team Power Smart — making a commitment to reduce our electricity consumption by 10% — we have reduced it by 24% without too much effort.  Most of it is learning about CFLs and appliances that use phantom power.  The photocopier in my office remains unplugged until I need it.  It never occurred to me that it was drawing power when it wasn’t in use.

Greenest Person 2008

Posted by Jennifer on Sep 18 2008 | Environment , Healthy Living , Life in Vancouver

I met Emily at a gathering in the West End in August.  Two days later I found out that she was in the contest for the Greenest Person in the World.  So, I voted for her on-line at 3rdwhale.

The winner will be announced next week at SFU.  Her last remaining competitor is Matthias from Germany who lives in Malaysia.

A video that is well-worth watching at TED.  It’s more than a climate crisis . . . we have a democracy crisis.
